Saws are buzzing once again on Pasta sala in Jelgava. Four sculptors from Latvia and Lithuania are transforming once-mighty oaks into various figures. In the hands of sculptor Māris Gailis, an oak has already taken the shape of a seal. “It comes from the folk song ‘Seals roared in the Daugava’. This is not the Daugava. Since all waters are connected, it is right here anyway. Secondly, the seal is a symbol of pristine nature. A symbol of freedom, because the seal is very free. It is claimed that seals cause a lot of damage, but it seems that is not entirely true.”
