“Latvijas valsts meži” uses innovative geosynthetic materials in forest road construction

To ensure load-bearing capacity in peaty soil during the reconstruction of the forest road “Skrīveru jaunais ceļš”, a/s “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) has used an innovative material – an extruded polymer geogrid and geotextile composite – beneath the frost-resistant sand layer. The completion of construction works and the handover of the more than 8 km long forest road are scheduled for the beginning of October this year.

The material was laid in those sections of the road where the existing roadbed was on unstable soils with peat content.

“During the design phase of the forest road, geotechnical surveys revealed that the existing road embankment contained peat soils mixed with stumps in several sections. To ensure the load-bearing capacity of the road in these sections, it was necessary to either replace the soil or implement additional road construction reinforcement measures. To ensure that the main forest road would be usable all year round after reconstruction (except during spring and autumn rainy periods), the author of the design project specified the use of an innovative geosynthetic material – an extruded polymer geogrid and geotextile composite – in these sections.”
