The population and habitat range of the 'extinct' but rediscovered bee are unclear, but are considered to be small. While studying the diversity of local bees, an entomologist from the University of Adelaide accidentally encountered Pharohylaeus lactiferus, which, according to studies of the species, was last seen almost 100 years ago.
In the history of research and observations, this bee has been encountered (spotted) only six times. The last of these, therefore, was in 1923.
While studying bees on the east coast of Australia, the entomologist found at least three Pharohylaeus lactiferus populations. The researcher is convinced that the species is at risk of extinction and that its populations are highly isolated.
