Global Witness reports that 227 environmental and land rights defenders were killed worldwide in 2020. Last year marks the second year since the non-governmental organisation began reporting on lethal attacks against people they believe to be defending natural resources, such as water supply routes, forests and oceans. Colombia is the most dangerous country for various activists, with 65 recorded incidents, the majority of which were directed at indigenous people and small-scale farmers.
