Illegal logging in the Amazon basin has reached previously untouched areas

When speaking of the part of the Amazon basin in Brazilian territory, the greatest concern is the fact that logging is "approaching" the centre of the rainforest territory.

A detailed analysis of satellite imagery shows that in seven Brazilian states (the so-called "Amazon" states) between August 2019 and July 2020, forests were cleared (i.e. not regenerated!) in an area three times the size of the city of São Paulo. Unfortunately, it is impossible to obtain clear and reliable data on logging volumes at the national level in Brazil, which is why determining what proportion of the timber harvested was obtained legally and what proportion illegally is effectively impossible. The researchers' report indicates that logging is taking place both in indigenous territories and in protected areas, which suggests a very high proportion of illegal activity.
