Hundreds of abandoned electric cars in France. How do they affect the environment?

Images have emerged in the media taken in one of the regions of France (Romorantin-Lanthenay), approximately 70 kilometres from the city of Orleans.

The pictures show a meadow with hundreds of small electric cars parked in rows. At first, it was not even known what the origin of this car graveyard was, and there were concerns that the batteries had not been removed, which could lead to environmental pollution.

The author of the images claimed that the electric cars had been sitting there for years, but it did not turn out to be quite so bleak. It is now known that the cars placed in the meadow were those used in carsharing services between 2011 and 2018 in Paris, Lyon, and Bordeaux.

The owners of the cars are several car rental companies that care little about them. The whole thing stems from a project that went bankrupt in 2018. 'Many who were in Paris in those years remember these small, nippy cars that darted all over the city,' writes the German publication Focus, and continues: 'Unfortunately, most of them were in poor condition – clearly, the users did not look after them and showed no mercy for the rented equipment.'
