Last year was the warmest in the history of the world's oceans on record. Since the 1940s, the ocean has warmed by approximately 417 zettajoules (1021 joules). Meanwhile, comparing 2020 and 2021, the ocean warmed by approximately 14 zettajoules, which is about 23 times more than all the energy consumed on Earth in 2019.
