How many days a year can a country rely on bioenergy alone? Latvia comes first in the European Union this year

Latvia ranks first among EU member states in 2024 when counting the days on which the country can rely on bioenergy alone. Accordingly, 16 August 2024 is the day from which Latvia can begin relying solely on bioenergy for the rest of the year. The aim of the European Bioenergy Day campaign is to draw attention to the fact that sustainable biomass is playing an ever greater role in the EU's energy transition.

According to Bioenergy Europe data, bioenergy is an essential component of the EU's energy system and economy, generating 85% of the EU's renewable heat, providing one third of the jobs created in the renewable energy sector and saving a volume of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions equivalent to Spain's annual emissions.

An awareness-raising campaign

The campaign presents the key facts about biomass and the bioenergy sector, and also celebrates the people, projects and companies helping Europe achieve carbon neutrality. In previous years, Bioenergy Europe launched the European Bioenergy Day campaign in order to provide tangible, clearly understandable examples of how bioenergy affects the lives of EU citizens.
