The regulation and the invasive species included within it have been binding on Latvia since 2014, but the implementation of its conditions in Latvia is delayed because the national regulatory framework regarding the management of these species – monitoring, control, and responsible institutions – has not yet been finalised. Ultimately, it all clearly comes down to financial resources.
At present, the giant hogweed is the only invasive species on the national list, but legislative amendments to create a framework for the management of invasive species are in the process of being reconciled.
It is envisaged that Cabinet of Ministers regulations will determine further species to be officially recognised as invasive at the national level.
