The Second World War is often explained as a time of self-sufficiency, solidarity and behavioural change in Great Britain; for example, all leisure travel was reduced to a minimum to save fuel for the needs of the army. Is there anything we can learn from the experience of that time, or gain today, when the crisis has been caused by Russia's aggression in Ukraine?
Scientists are not particularly convinced. "If it is currently necessary to reduce oil and gas consumption relatively quickly, the Second World War story of frugal fuel usage will certainly not be appropriate. The war story, which undoubtedly also includes tightening our belts, comes from a civic sector that is not applicable to the present day."
