Is the end nigh for fossil hydrogen?

The gas industry depicts fossil hydrogen, also known as "blue" hydrogen, as a climate-friendly substitute for fossil fuels. But, as the Welsh singer Mandy Rice-Davies might have said about the gas lobby's claims regarding fossil hydrogen, "well, they would say that, wouldn't they".

The production of fossil hydrogen requires large volumes of fossil natural gas, which is why its promotion, using terms like "a successful climate solution", helps gas industry companies to keep operating, even though it has a significant impact on the climate and must be phased out urgently.

If hydrogen is produced from fossil gas, a large amount of pollutants that significantly impact climate change are released into the atmosphere during the production process. Industry lobbyists claim that some of these emissions will be reduced by carbon capture facilities. (...)
