This issue is causing concern in the Saeima, where several committee meetings have been held in recent days regarding the security of gas supply in Latvia. However, the Ministry of Economics has urged people not to overstate the role of Russian gas in the supply to the Baltic states.
“Yes, it must be said that until now the share of Russian gas in Latvia has been quite significant, but this by no means implies that we have not had the opportunity to receive this gas from alternative routes as well. Until now, gas flows to Latvia were determined more by the price factor,” says Edijs Šaicāns, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of Economics.
