The Burtnieki municipality council acknowledges that there is no single main reason for the decline in the quality of the lake's ecosystem. Therefore, alongside the ban on commercial fishing, fishing for special purposes—a land-improvement fishing programme—will be resumed from 2021.
This was trialled in 2017, in cooperation with a group of Finnish scientists and fishermen. The aim of the fishing is to reduce the number of cyprinid fish in order to increase the population of zander and perch, which are some of the most essential links in the lake's ecosystem food chain.
