The peak of the spring forest planting season continues until the end of June. This year, A/s “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) is offering top-quality selected seedlings, which grow faster and provide greater timber increment, for purchase by any forest owner, even without prior reservation. However, to better plan the species and origins to be grown each year according to the region where the forest is intended to be planted, advance reservations and orders are still being accepted.

The “LVM sēklas un stādi” nurseries offer pine bare-root seedlings, pine container seedlings, spruce container seedlings, and spruce bare-root seedlings with an improved root system for purchase. A wide range of forest seedlings remains available in the freezers at the nurseries – Strenči, Mazsili, and Podiņi nurseries.

“When purchasing seedlings, it is important to find out the origin region of the seeds used to grow them. Pine seedlings in Latvia are divided into two origin regions – east and west, while spruce has three origin regions – west, east, and the central region. The Forest Law stipulates that seedlings grown from seeds collected in the eastern region may also be planted on forest land in the western part of Latvia. However, seedlings whose seeds were obtained in the west will only be suitable for forests in the western part of the country. When purchasing forest seedlings at LVM nurseries, the buyer is issued a certificate confirming the origin of the planting material,” explains Laima Zvejniece, Production Executive Director of “LVM Sēklas un stādi”.
