Forest managers: owners are becoming wiser and thinking long-term

In the field of forest management in Latvia, current key issues include rising timber prices, damage caused by pests, workforce challenges, the simultaneous increasing presence of technology in all processes, as well as the European Green Deal, which is likely to bring changes to the entire sector.
In total, forests cover 3.4 million hectares in Latvia. JSC "Latvijas valsts meži" (LVM), which is wholly owned by the state and whose shares are held by the Ministry of Agriculture, manages and maintains 1.62 million hectares of Latvian land, including 1.60 million hectares of forest land (also including peatlands), of which 1.39 million hectares is forest.
