Forest inventory data for private individuals now easily accessible free of charge

The State Forest Service has simplified access to inventory data for privately owned forests. In the State Forest Register, private individuals can view the geographical and textual data of their forest inventory free of charge by authenticating via Latvija.lv tools, and they can also download this data. From now on, private individuals do not need to sign a contract with the State Forest Service for the use of the State Forest Register or submit an application to receive this information for free. The existing procedures for legal entities to obtain data remain unchanged.

The State Forest Register (https://gis.vmd.gov.lv) is an information system maintained by the State Forest Service (VMD) regarding forests and the economic activities conducted therein. The VMD also registers information about completed forest inventories in this system.

Any private individual can view the geographical and textual data of their forest inventory, as well as print or download it, free of charge in the State Forest Register by authenticating through the Latvija.lv portal's unified login module, for example, by using internet banking. Previously, private individuals could only obtain free information about forests in their ownership or legal possession by concluding an agreement with the VMD on the use of the State Forest Register and by submitting an application for access to the free section of inventory data.

As for legal entities, the existing requirement remains: to use the forest inventory information contained in the State Forest Register, they must sign an agreement with the VMD regarding the use of the State Forest Register.

The existing procedure regarding the signing of an agreement and the submission of an application remains in place for private individuals who wish to access the paid section of the State Forest Register, where forest owners submit applications for tree felling, notifications regarding tree felling, or reports on forestry activities carried out on their forest property.

For those private individuals who wish to transfer data from the State Forest Register regarding forests in their ownership to third-party information systems, the existing procedure for signing an agreement and submitting an application remains unchanged.

One of the VMD's operational priorities over the next few years is the development of e-services, ensuring they are provided free of charge to forest owners and hunters. The option for private individuals to view their forest inventory data for free is one of the first free e-services that the VMD is providing to its clients.
