As of Thursday, Indonesia has banned the export of palm oil, fearing that shortages and rising prices of this product could lead to social unrest.
In Indonesia, the world's largest producer of palm oil, people in several cities have had to wait for hours in queues at distribution centres to buy palm oil at subsidised prices. Concerned about social tension, Indonesian authorities are trying to secure supplies of palm oil, and on Wednesday unexpectedly decided that the embargo would apply to all oils, not just those used for food.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has announced that providing the country's 270 million inhabitants with palm oil is the government's highest priority.
