Farmers point to problem with used packaging

We are seeing less and less burning of used agricultural packaging on the edges of fields, in forests and elsewhere, yet many farmers still dispose of silage film, bulk bags, chemical canisters and other products suitable for recycling or recovery in this way. Sometimes, household waste, including plastics, is also burned along with agricultural packaging.

It is less well known that used packaging is sometimes buried in the ground or dumped, for example, in the forest. How many such cases have there been, and how many farmers have been warned? There are no answers to these questions because agricultural packaging is not tracked, and the principle of extended producer responsibility does not apply to it. Perhaps it should be tracked after all? Calculations show that the total amount of used agricultural packaging in Latvia amounts to many thousands of tonnes.
