Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary theory, showed great interest in the cowslip in his time. The cowslip has become a kind of model species for scientists, as research into cowslips allows conclusions to be drawn about other species as well. The most common model species used in research are the rat, the fruit fly, and baker's yeast. The cowslip serves as a good model species because it allows for the study of how herbs and pollinators are faring in nature.
Thanks to the collectively gathered data on cowslips, it will be possible to obtain an overview of the viability of the cowslip and its associated species in Estonia and Latvia. It will be possible to evaluate which regions are naturally intact and in which regions the situation is beginning to deteriorate.
