Estonia needs a pulp mill

...that is the view of the Estonian Ministry of the Environment.

The Ministry has assessed the situation in Estonia, concluding that the country needs a pulp mill in order to "increase the added value of wood through chemical processing." It was also concluded that, currently, low-value wood is being burned or supplied to pulp mills in Finland and Sweden. One of the goals of the new European Forest Strategy is the use of wood in processing sectors where it is possible to provide the greatest added value. Furthermore, this strategy requires clarification on exactly which wood meets the criteria for subsidising renewable energy production. The Estonian Ministry of the Environment official responsible for forest issues explains that most people not involved in the industry do not even have an idea of the volume of timber generated during logging that can be burned for energy production. The Forest Strategy emphasises that it is desirable to use wood for energy production that cannot be used at all in the manufacture of long-lasting (sustainable, durable) products, as well as wood chips remaining from the production process at sawmills or recycled timber.
