This coming weekend, on 22 and 23 May, Tērvete will host the forestry sector's biggest event – “Latvijas Meža dienas”. What role does wood play in capturing carbon and producing oxygen? How can building with timber help the climate? How are forests regenerated and tended? – these are just a few of the topical questions that visitors will be able to find answers to during the event, which this year is devoted to the theme “Catching carbon in trees and growing oxygen”.

Over the course of two days, schoolchildren and families will have the chance to get to know Latvian forestry at more than 100 information stops. Visitors will be able to learn more about modern technology in the forestry sector and about career opportunities, as well as try their hand at various forest tasks – planting trees, sawing roundwood and stepping into the role of a forest machinery operator. There will also be a chance to explore the many uses of wood and to enjoy the cultural programme on the main stage. Admission to the event is free.

Particular attention is being paid this year to forest regeneration. Together with schoolchildren and families, the plan is to plant more than 10 000 larch seedlings in an area of storm-damaged forest, caring for the new forest and for future carbon capture. As it grows, the planted forest will absorb carbon dioxide and thereby help to mitigate climate change.

An extensive programme for schools and families

On Friday 22 May, the event is devoted in particular to schools and to participants in LVM education programmes. During the day there will be opportunities to learn about forest regeneration and tending processes, take part in hands-on activities and meet professionals from the sector. On the main stage, Marģers Majors will appear with his “Oxygen experiments”, as will the singer BŪŪ with an open-air concert programme.

Saturday 23 May, meanwhile, is especially for families. The youngest visitors will be able to discover forest life and its inhabitants, while everyone else can learn more about sustainable forest management and current developments in the sector. The day's cultural programme features the Staff Band of the National Armed Forces, “Tutas lietas” and the hip-hop artist Ozols.
