The European Commission has announced that 'the recently published and initiated European Green Deal will be based on climate and related issues.' This includes 'ambitious greenhouse gas emission reductions' and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. One of the points in the EC plan envisages a transition (or, as written in the document, increasing reliance) on bioenergy sources.

The report and its review (1, 2) provide a critical assessment of how the European Union's Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) regulations can help ensure bioenergy 'support' for the climate (namely, that the use of bioenergy is beneficial for the climate). Both the report and the review focus more on how the aforementioned regulations align (comply) with other EU legislation or documents, such as the Renewable Energy Directive and the Emissions Trading System.
