According to the latest data from the University of Maryland, available on the World Resources Institute platform Global Forest Watch, tropical regions lost 10% more primary rainforest in 2022 compared to 2021.

The loss of primary tropical forests in 2022 reached 4.1 million hectares, which is equivalent to losing 11 football pitches per minute. This forest loss resulted in 2.7 gigatonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to India's annual fossil fuel emissions.
