World leaders in Glasgow pledged to end deforestation by 2030. There have been several (even many) attempts to protect forests to date. What results have they yielded? What is the current situation regarding deforestation?
As is well known, forests absorb CO2, which is the biggest cause of global warming. The loss of forest area has a serious impact on climate change. UN documents state that since 1990, approximately 420 million hectares of forest have been lost for various purposes. Agriculture is cited as one of the most significant reasons.
Speaking of previous goals for forest conservation, it must be remembered that in 2014, the UN published a call to reduce deforestation by 2020, with the aim of ending it completely by 2030. Meanwhile, in 2017, a plan was created to increase afforested areas by 3% by 2030.
