Deep, deep in the thicket of the forest (since after the logging ban, forest land accounts for 90% of Latvia's territory), a young boy is doing his schoolwork in a cabin made of dry logs gnawed by bark beetles. Since there is no wind today
and the sun has also set, his grandmother is pedalling a stationary bicycle connected to a dynamo to generate green energy for the router and computer. As is typical for an old gas-passer, she occasionally emits small puffs of methane. To ensure these do not affect the ecological situation, she is attached to a gas cylinder. She looks anxiously at the clock, as her daughter—the boy's mother—is due home from work soon. By then, enough methane must be produced to prepare dinner for the family. The grandmother is happy about tomorrow; meteorologists are promising wind, so there will be no need to struggle on the exercise bike, but she has to think about how the father will get to work. The only track connecting them to the city is, at the same time, both the road to the city and the site for installing wind turbines, because everything else, as I mentioned before, is forest. The father has an electric car that has passed zero-carbon certification. Steel was not used for the body, as it requires energy processing and contains carbon. Likewise, aluminium, being very energy-intensive, cannot be used. Therefore, only the bark-beetle-gnawed log passed certification, as it had to be utilised without burning it—that is, without emitting CO2.
For dinner today, the family will have organically grown peas, as winter is approaching and heating will be required. The peas come from their own garden. Since pumping water from the well requires energy, it is not used unnecessarily. For major needs, they go straight to the pea bed to ensure a circular economy. After eating dinner, the whole family goes to sleep happy, having first connected themselves to the methane storage system. Everything
is going according to plan, and it looks like, provided the winter isn't cold—and it won't be, due to global warming—fuel for the winter will be secured. The family's habits have been "broken" for several years now, so everyone is happy and climate-neutral...
