In Finland, around 80% of raw materials (timber) for the wood industry are purchased from private forest owners.
According to 2018 statistics, clearcutting in Finland accounted for 3.4% of felling types (with the remaining being small-diameter clearcuts and selective felling). The proportion of clearcutting has doubled compared to 2017, especially in Eastern Finland (an increase of as much as 20% in North Karelia).
According to information from the Finnish Forest Centre, this increase in clearcutting can be explained by the damage caused by snow in the relevant regions of the country.
