In a recent publication, researchers from the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies and the Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" stressed that, as the climate grows warmer, forest owners and farmers must work ever more cleverly and know ever more in order to adapt to the new conditions. The Federation of Latvian Woodworking Industry has likewise pointed out that, because of the warm and rainy weather, half of the timber prepared in the forest is inaccessible, as heavy machinery cannot get into the forest. Climate change is increasingly prompting a search for the available alternatives in forest management, because, as experts note, these industries are not going anywhere, but they will certainly change — and those changes can already be seen today.
The forestry sector is undergoing change
Historically, the forest is one of Latvia's largest national economic resources, providing jobs and a livelihood for more than 40 thousand people, while indirectly employing another 30 thousand or so in various related industries, including transport, science, construction and energy. The woodworking industry's significant contribution to the national economy is undeniable, yet the sector is increasingly facing challenges brought about by climate change and shifting weather.
Over recent years, Latvia's forestry sector has experienced substantial problems caused by climate change. As a result of warm, wet winters, heavy machinery often cannot reach the prepared timber, creating logistical problems and driving up costs. Logging is likewise affected by the poor condition of roads and by restrictions that prevent timber from being moved in suitable conditions.
What are the solutions?
At a time when technological support and modern data analysis methods make it possible to forecast future threats, relying solely on traditional forestry methods is no longer a sufficiently effective long-term strategy. Alternative forestry, which promotes sustainable and economically advantageous forest management, is attracting ever greater attention.
The new approach, introduced in Latvia only very recently, involves extending forest harvesting cycles or forgoing clear-cutting, thereby increasing forests' capacity to capture and store carbon for at least 40 years. Beyond the carbon capture benefits, this approach also helps to preserve forest ecosystems and biological diversity. A longer forest growth period means a more stable ecological environment, less soil erosion and greater resilience to climate change. Forest owners have the opportunity to manage their forests more responsibly while at the same time earning additional income from their property, thus reducing dependence on the volatile demand cycles of the timber market. What is more, once a carbon capture project has concluded, forest owners are free to use the areas concerned as they see fit.
Adaptation and innovation as a precondition for the sector's development
As experts point out, the future of forestry is closely bound up with the ability to adapt to new conditions. A longer growing season and climate change create a need to reconsider the choice of tree species and management methods. In Central Europe, for example, a gradual northward retreat of spruce stands has already been observed, and this may affect Latvia too. Instead, beech and other alternative tree species better suited to the new conditions could take on a greater role.
Improving infrastructure is equally important in order to ensure efficient and sustainable logging. The condition of roads and access to forests are becoming a critical issue, particularly because of the changeable weather. One solution could be the introduction of digital monitoring systems, allowing transport and logistics companies to plan their work better on the basis of real-time information about road conditions and the weather.
Climate change is inevitable
Climate change is an inevitable reality that has a substantial impact on Latvia's forestry sector. Sustainable and innovative forest management is becoming an important precondition for ensuring the sector's competitiveness and stability in the future. Alternative forestry and adaptation strategies that include sustainable tree growing, the introduction of new species and smarter forest management solutions can deliver long-term benefits, both economically and ecologically.
Those who stand to gain will be the forest owners and industry participants who adapt proactively and seize the new opportunities, rather than merely reacting to crises. A considered approach to forestry will make it possible to preserve and develop the many-sided value of Latvia's forests for future generations, ensuring not only economic prosperity but also the long-term preservation of natural riches.
