By the end of 2023, more than 40 protected habitats will be managed in Latvia

(zemeunvalsts.lv commentary) The feature and story display a peculiarity that has for some time been characteristic of the public broadcaster - using the opportunity to explain and explain that forest management is, if not bad, then at least unfortunate. Moreover, as it happens, this very news item was picked up by zemeunvalsts.lv interlocutors while listening to the radio. What exactly is the story about and what was it intended to be?

Dace Sāmīte emphasises that managing protected habitats is a major challenge because it cannot be done whenever and however one wishes.

"To avoid damaging, for example, land where there are certain protected snails or anything else, one must work as carefully as possible, and that is not always easy to ensure. Latvia has little experience in the restoration and management of protected habitats. Elsewhere in the world and in Europe, there are specialised firms that deal with this, and it is their field of work. They have access to special machinery; we have what we have, and we must try to work with that," Sāmīte points out.

Residents have already started to worry about piles of logs in the coastal dune forests of Užava, thinking that Latvijas valsts meži is clear-felling forest in a nature reserve, but this time the story is about a DAP project where Latvijas valsts meži is only a cooperation partner. The project is to a certain extent unique, emphasises Andris Verners, Head of Forest Management Planning for North Kurzeme at Latvijas valsts meži. Municipalities and other partners are involved in the project.

"This, in my opinion, is a unique project, that we are able to and everyone understands what we are doing and why. We are implementing it in practice in an organised manner. When we move from ideas to actual work, people notice and observe it," A. Verners points out.
