Compared to 2005 data, it is expected that the proportion of alien species could increase by 36% by the middle of the century (2050). The 'newcomers' will primarily be insects.

These are the results obtained by an international research team led by Hanno Seebens at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Germany. The study's results were recently published in the scientific journal Global Change Biology. The research team calculated the projected increase (accumulation) in the proportion of alien species on an international level, as well as the respective proportions among major species groups for the period up to 2050.
