In Latvia, the little tern can be observed from mid-April to mid-September, spending the winter off the African coast of the Atlantic Ocean. These slender birds feed on small fish, crustaceans and invertebrates, hunting them in coastal waters by diving.

Ornithologist Ruslans Matrozis, coordinator of the 2024 Bird of the Year campaign, explains that the breeding population of little terns in recent years does not exceed 70 to 100 pairs, which nest in 10 to 15 colonies along the seacoast and on small islands in the Daugava valley, as well as on rooftops in Riga.
