Around one of the world's loneliest and most remote island archipelagos - Tristan da Cunha - plans are underway to establish a marine protected area that will be the fourth largest in the world and the largest in the Atlantic Ocean. The total area of the protected territory is planned to be 687,245 square kilometres. The Tristan da Cunha archipelago will be the centre of this marine reserve (the island group is located 2,879 km from Cape Town and 3,923 km from Montevideo). Representatives of the Tristan da Cunha government have announced that 90% of the waters around the islands will become a "no-take zone", where fishing, mining and other so-called "extractive activities" will be prohibited. Conservationists believe that this will allow for the continued operation of the small-scale lobster fishery outside the boundaries of the planned reserve, while also protecting the tens of millions of seabirds that inhabit the small archipelago.
