At present, the construction of wind farms in Latvia is no longer just a story about moving towards a greener future, but about our own energy independence, points out Mārtiņš Čakste, Chairman of the Management Board of Latvenergo.
In the short term, it is very difficult to influence the energy resource price crisis, which has been exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but in the medium term, this impact can be mitigated by developing new energy production facilities, including wind and solar parks, says M. Čakste. He notes that, given the crisis situation, Latvenergo is currently looking for ways to implement wind projects as quickly as possible. If the intention had previously been to develop these wind farms over five or six years, we now want to do it as quickly as possible, increasing our country's energy independence, points out M. Čakste, adding that under favourable conditions, Latvenergo could begin building its first wind farm as early as next year.
