An incident that took place on 26 May in the Līksna forest district of the South Latgale regional forestry office shows that forest rangers do not simply walk past illegal dumping of industrial waste. On 27 May, the news portal jauns.lv reported that “29 barrels containing a substance of unknown origin have been found in a forest in the Daugavpils district”. It turns out that on 26 May, while performing his official duties, Līksna district forest ranger Kirils Sidorovs discovered the 29 discarded barrels mentioned in the article. While monitoring the site, he noticed a van approaching the pile of dumped barrels. The two young men in the van were also observant, and upon noticing the forest ranger, they hastily drove away. The forest ranger followed them in his official vehicle, caught up with the fugitives and ordered them to stop. Upon inspecting the interior of the van, it was discovered that it contained the same type of barrels. The forest ranger immediately called the police and handed the potential culprits over to law enforcement officers.
