“Although the number of grass fires decreased significantly last spring, this was most likely due to the weather – a damp spring and extensive areas affected by flooding – rather than a change in public behaviour. This spring will reveal the true reason for the decline. At the same time, I would like to emphasise that 752 fires is still a large number, which placed an additional burden on firefighters and endangered people and property. We must understand that these are fires caused by people themselves and their deliberate actions. These fires could have been avoided if citizens realised that grass burning is dangerous and not a proper way to tidy up land. You do not get rid of old buildings, cars and household items by burning them. Why does such behaviour seem acceptable when it comes to one’s own land?” asks Jānis Grīnbergs, Deputy Chief of the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).
