C19, the war in Ukraine, mass shootings, inflation and more, and more. Sometimes it feels like there is no end to the bad news, and particularly in the "age of scrolling news feeds", it can all negatively affect a person's mental wellbeing. Therefore, an increasing number of people are actively trying to avoid the news or at least limit their consumption of it.
According to the latest survey by the Reuters Institute (Digital News Report), an average of 38% of respondents from over 40 countries indicated that they sometimes or quite often avoid the news, which is a significantly higher percentage compared to 2017, when such respondents accounted for 27%. As can be seen in the chart, selective news avoidance, as Reuters calls it, has become more prevalent in many countries, and, for example, Brazilians are the most likely to deliberately reduce their news consumption.
