“Allotments in the city are essential – for many residents of Riga, they provide an opportunity to spend time in nature and the fresh air. Furthermore, allotments make Riga more environmentally friendly. That is why the Riga City Council is working to offer the best solutions for allotment tenants – this concerns security, the tidiness of the area, and the implementation of a system to ensure stability and clear rules of play for those tenants who keep their gardens in good order!” emphasised the Chairman of the Riga City Council, Mārtiņš Staķis.
“The Property Department took over the 59.2-hectare Lucavsala area, which contains 1,529 allotments, under its supervision from the reorganised executive directorates three months ago. There are 750 contracts concluded with individual allotment users, and 275 contracts concluded with three associations – “Jumpravsalas”, “Latvijas Arheoklubs”, and “AUM”. Allotment users pay an annual rental fee to the municipality, which is 0.008 euros per square metre in the Kazassēklis area and 0.012 euros per square metre in the rest of the area. Consequently, the annual rental fee for an allotment of approximately 220 square metres is between 1.76 euros and 2.64 euros. Information about vacant allotments is regularly published on the municipality and department websites, so residents should keep an eye on the information, as there is significant interest in allotment rentals,” informed the acting director of the Riga City Council Property Department, Vladimirs Ozoliņš, to the meeting participants.
