The bird was perched on power lines and was difficult to spot in the twilight, but its unusual body shape prompted her to stop and pay closer attention. She decided to investigate the situation, observe the bird's behaviour, and gather further information. A short while later, she noticed a second bird on a nearby agricultural machinery hangar, which led her to wonder about the potential presence of a pair of little owls and the possibility of them nesting in the area. Moments later, one of the birds flew off and began calling from inside the hangar, while the other bird watched her from its original perch. Tatjana Ignatoviča adds that she was unable to confirm the little owl's nesting that night.

Upon hearing of the potential little owl sighting, bird surveyor Edgars Smislovs went to verify the presence of the rare Latvian nester. He documented the little owl's nesting site, concluding that a pair of little owls was already tending to their young there.
