The European Commission has published its working plan for 2025-2030 under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and energy labelling, together with an accompanying document on its implementation (in English).

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation is the legal framework that sets out ecodesign requirements. Together with the Energy Labelling Regulation, which provides for the labelling of energy-related products, it gives consumers information on energy efficiency, on the consumption of energy and other resources, and further information about products, thereby making it easier for consumers to choose and encouraging the uptake of more sustainable and energy-efficient products.

The working plan sets out a set of key priorities for building experience and developing the necessary capacity in cooperation with EU Member States, so that the Ecodesign Regulation can fully realise its regulatory potential. It also paves the way for covering a wider range of product groups in future through preparatory studies and impact assessments. In setting ecodesign rules, the Commission will avoid placing a disproportionate administrative burden on businesses, particularly SMEs.

The first working plan covers priority final products (textiles, furniture, tyres, mattresses), intermediate products (iron and steel, aluminium) and horizontal requirements (repairability, and the recycled content and recyclability of electrical and electronic equipment). The working plan also sets out a framework for reviewing or adopting rules for products on which work had already begun earlier under the Ecodesign Directive.

The working plan also includes a list of products to be given priority for energy efficiency labelling under the Energy Labelling Regulation, in order to reflect market and technological developments.

The adoption of product requirements will help develop the market for sustainable circular economy products, ensuring that valuable materials are reused and promoting repairability, recyclability and recycled content in products. The Ecodesign Regulation will make a significant contribution to achieving a clean, decarbonised and resource-efficient EU economy.
