A new educational “Kokmīļu pietura” (Wood Lovers' Stop) opened at Āgenskalns Market this autumn. This interactive stop invites families with children to discover wood as a sustainable, climate-friendly material. “Kokmīļu pietura” is part of the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund project “Nemēslo mežā”, and it was created by AS “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) in cooperation with AS “Latvijas Finieris” and Āgenskalns Market.

Līga Abizāre, Head of Environmental Education at LVM, says: "The wooden stand is made of durable “Latvijas Finieris” plywood, produced from birch trees that stored carbon as they grew. Another interesting object at the “Kokmīļu pietura” is a block of wood measuring one cubic metre, which anyone can sit on. That much wood grows in Latvia very quickly – in just 1.3 seconds – and in doing so it absorbs one tonne of carbon dioxide. That is why wood products are often called carbon stores.”

A wide variety of plywood and wooden blocks are freely available at the “Kokmīļu pietura” for children to work with creatively. Some of the wooden blocks were made from trees brought down by this year's severe storm in the grounds of the Latvijas valsts meži nature park in Tērvete.

The “Kokmīļu pietura” was opened on 13 October, when families were invited to take part in a special “Kokmīļu darbnīca” workshop led by LVM's defender of clean forests – Cūkmens.
