Thaw and flood risks in Latvia at the end of December

A thaw will begin over the weekend, which will continue rapidly into next week. According to current long-term weather forecast information, the return of stable freezing conditions to our region in the period leading up to the New Year is unlikely.

Accordingly, in the first half and middle of next week, the inflow of water into rivers will be rapid, increasing their flow and raising water levels. A yellow-level warning for high water levels will be in effect for most river basins in the western and central parts of the country. There is a high probability that the intense thaw, compounded by precipitation (mostly rain towards the end of the week), will cause water levels to rise to a point where, in certain regions, even orange and red warning thresholds are exceeded, resulting in significant flooding of areas.

The most rapid rise in water levels will occur in the rivers of the western and central parts. If ice jams and slush dams form, the rise in water levels may be even greater.
