The Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, in cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, has successfully implemented the project "Inclusive Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Forest Management and Carbon Stock Enhancement in Mongolia’s Productive Forest Landscapes".

Work began in 2015, involving 101 forest user groups across 11 forest plots in various regions of Mongolia. The forest user groups together protect around 7% of forests in five provinces, which include 4 ecologically significant areas and 10 river basins.
