Research begins on 70 previously identified fish migration barriers in rivers

Researchers are beginning a study of 70 previously identified fish migration barriers in rivers. Experts from the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "Bior" point out that reducing the impact of weirs, mill pond dams, and small-scale hydroelectric power plants would significantly improve the state of fish fauna in Latvian rivers.

Researchers hope to find the best solutions in cooperation with property owners and local governments, by securing funding from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, which has allocated 2 million euros for the removal of river barriers in Latvia by 2027. (...)
