When Tsitakakoike – one of the largest baobabs in Madagascar – died in 2018, it was a great loss. The tree was estimated to be around 1,400 years old, was considered sacred by the residents of the nearby village of Andombiro, and its fruit and bark had always been used by the villagers for various practical purposes. Furthermore, the villagers believed that the great giant tree, whose name translates to "the tree on the other side of which a shout cannot be heard", was the home of ancestral spirits.
