The number of white-tailed eagles in Latvia has increased significantly over the last few decades, with the highest concentration found in Kurzeme. These eagles typically nest near bodies of water as they feed on fish and waterfowl. With the rise in their numbers, they are occupying new territories and beginning to nest further away from water more frequently. One of the species' characteristics is nesting in clear-cut areas where they favour ecological trees – in such locations, more than a third of all white-tailed eagles in Latvia build their nests. White-tailed eagles are sedentary – they remain in their nesting areas all year round.
