New nature conservation plan for Gauja National Park being developed; objections received

The Nature Conservation Agency (DAP) is developing a new nature conservation plan for Gauja National Park (GNP), against which objections have been received from affected landowners. As Elīna Ezeriņa, head of the DAP Communications and Nature Education Division, informed the LETA agency, the previously developed GNP nature conservation plan is no longer current and its validity has expired, therefore a new one needs to be developed.

GNP was founded in 1973 to protect the unique natural values of the Gauja ancient valley and its surroundings. Since 2004, GNP has been included in the network of protected nature areas of EU importance – ⟦"Natura 2000"⟧. In accordance with EU nature directives, which have been transposed into national legislation, a ⟦"Natura 2000 nature conservation plan"⟧ must be developed for such territories.
