To celebrate the 160th birthday of Jānis Čakste, the Chairman of the People's Council, President of the Constitutional Assembly and the first President of Latvia, the Institute of Horticulture has named a newly bred apple variety after the distinguished statesman’s family home – ‘Čakstes Auči’.
