The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development is still preparing a more detailed explanation of its plans for Neatkarīgā. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture, which currently manages the lynx population, is unhappy with its colleagues' actions and does not consider the matter to be decided yet. Jānis Bārs, an official at the Forest Resources and Hunting Division, points out that the initiative for a lynx hunting ban is currently in the Saeima, meaning the legislature, not the executive, should formulate its position first. From this perspective, the Ministry of the Environment is currently acting unilaterally. Regarding the hunting itself, the position of the Ministry of Agriculture has not changed – it is deemed necessary both for population management and for scientific research purposes. Moreover, sooner or later, Latvia will have to decide on hunting another protected predator species. As events in the Valka municipality show, the brown bear is here to stay in Latvia. The Estonians are already hunting them, and we will likely have no other choice either.
