A wolf suffering from mange has been culled in the Mētriena parish of the Madona region. It turns out that such cases are not uncommon, and due to the high density of the wolf population, the disease is progressing very rapidly. Haralds Barviks, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Hunters Association, assesses the situation:

"Unfortunately, wolves suffering from mange are being culled more and more frequently in all regions of Latvia. This is unequivocally an indicator of an unhealthy population. Apparently, we have not assessed the wolf population numbers well enough. The spread of mange across a large part of the population is one of the indicators that points to the high density of the population."
