European draft regulation threatens to disqualify peat

The forthcoming Taxonomy regulation draft stipulates that peat and peat products will not be included within the framework of climate-friendly management; the peat industry and plant nurseries are calling for this provision to be removed.

Such concerns were voiced during the seminar-discussion Challenges for the peat industry in the European Union Green Deal, or how much longer will peat be available to growers in Latvia and Europe?, which focused primarily on adopted and upcoming regulations that could significantly affect not only peat extraction and the manufacturing of its products in the future, but also plant nurseries, farmers and foresters.

Although external demand for peat products (substrates) is growing, the most important issue for those working in the sector, as well as for the plant nurseries and farmers who consume these products, relates to the objectives of the EU Green Deal and their implementation not only in Latvia but throughout the European Union, as they could result in peat becoming a scarce resource.
