A delegation from the European Parliament's Budget Committee will visit Latvia from 14 to 16 April to assess how the strengthening of European Union defence and crisis preparedness affects the budget.
During the visit, members of the European Parliament's Budget Committee will meet Saeima deputies, the ministers of defence and finance, representatives of the State Audit Office, representatives of local governments and the defence industry, as well as civil society organisations and other stakeholders. The delegation will also visit the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant and the military equipment manufacturing facility “Patria Latvia” in Valmiera.
On the second day of the visit, members of the Budget Committee will travel to Latgale, where they will meet representatives of Balvi local government, the mayors of Latgale region cities and representatives of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments. The delegation will also visit the Vientuļi and Grebņeva border control points to gain an understanding of both the problems encountered and the work planned. Particular attention will be paid to defence spending during the visit.
The delegation will be led by Budget Committee member Hélder Sousa Silva (EPP, Portugal), and will include Andrzej Halicki (EPP, Poland), Nils Ušakovs (S&D, Latvia), Jean-Marc Germain (S&D, France), Julien Sanchez (PfE, France), Tobiasz Bocheński (ECR, Poland) and Alexander Jungbluth (ESN, Germany). Roberts Zīle (ECR, Latvia) will also join the delegation on 15 April.
